William Payne was born in Kenilworth, Warwickshire in 1862.He attested for the 28th Brigade in Warwick on 21 July 1880.Transferred to Royal West Kent R.
Served Egypt, Sudan Gibraltar and at home.He was discharged as Sergeant in 1892 having completed 12 years service.In the 1901 Census he is shown as living in Cosham, Farnham Hampshire, occupation given as Soldier Colour Sergeant
His Medal index card shows ineligible for the Victory Medal, and Medal roll states "Visit to France" so this looks like his WW1 sole entitlement.
