Jones died when the S.S.Tacoma was sunk by the U109 on 1st February 1941 387 miles north of Bermuda.A salvo of three torpedos were fired, two hitting the zig-zagging ship. The ship sank by the bow after 4 minutes. The Germans reported that the crew abandoned ship in 5 lifeboats, but the crew were not questioned as the ship had already been identified by her distress signals. These signals had been received ashore and the U.S.S.Roe was sent to search for survivors but found no trace of her as the incorrect position had been given. The Master, 87 crew members and nine gunners were lost.
