Gilbert Matthew James Lowther
ilbert Matthew James Lowther was born in Chertsey, Surrey on 21 September 1897, the son of George and Kate Lowther. Enlisting as a Private with the Seaforth Highlanders (Regimental Number 4767) he served much of the war in this rank before applying for a commission whilst noted as a Cadet. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 28 August 1917, he served in that rank for the rest of the war, being advanced Lieutenant after the conflict; he resigned his Commission in 1921. Joining a company that specialised in the manufacture of sacks and covers, Lowther was Company Secretary & Director by 1939, living in Ipswich, Suffolk. He died there on 15 April 1966.
