H.M.S.MARRATA was protecting an Artic Convoy, no JW57 which had sailed from Loch Ewe for Russia on 20th February 1944.The convoy was sighted by German reconnaissance planes on the 23rd and H.M.S. Mahratta was torpedoed by the U-990 on the 25th-she quickly sank with loss of 220 of her crew: there were 17 survivors.
