John Branthwaite was born on 01/08/1906 at Sedgefield, Hartlepool, Durham, occupation given as Miner. He joined the Royal Navy on 28th January 1926.His early service included H.M.S. Cyclops, a Submarine Depot and supply vessel and H.M.S. Fitzroy, a Survey vessel.
At some time he joined the Submarine service, and his Long Service Medal is noted as traced 6/10/1942 being sent on 28th October to H.M.S. Dolphin.
H.M.S. Parhian conducted 21 patrols during WW2, in the Far East and the Mediterranean.
She sunk several vessels Including on the 20th June 1940 (Lt Commr M.G.Rimminton) the Italian Submarine DIAMONTE which was sunk 35 nautical miles North-West of Tubruk with all hands (5 Officers and 38 ratings were lost)
On the 25th June 1941 (Commander M.G.Rimington) she sunk the French submarine SOUFFLEUR off Beirut with the loss of 50 men.
Rimington was awarded the D.S.O. and bar for these two successful attacks on enemy submarines.
H.M.S. Parthian is believed to have been mined on the 5th August, 1943 with the loss of all hands
The later service record of Branthwaite is not available at present, but he had obviously been appointed to a different Submarine by this time as he survived the War.
Further details of the patrols of H.M.S. Parthian can be found on uboat, net.
Worthy of further research.
