The most excellent Order of The British Empire (O.B.E.) Civil Officers second type breast badge, silver gilt,1914/15 Star trio, Defence Medal.
Star named to: LIEUT.E.S.A Baynes K.R.R.C.
British War and Victory Medals, named to:
CAPT.E.S.A. BAYNES.
Medals very fine and better, mounted on wearing bar, ribbons faded.
Also comes with a medal For Distinguished Service to the City of New York 1939 Obverse: The arms of New York City within a wreath. Marked sterling.
This was probably awarded for his work as a Trade Commissioner.
O.B.E. London Gazette 2nd January 1950 Edward Stuart Augustus Baynes, Esq.,United Kingdom Trade Commissioner, Dublin.
Edward Stuart Augustus Baynes was born in 1889 to Edward Neil Baynes and Charlotte Augusta Irby. He studied Architecture at Radley College Oxford and had barely started his career when war broke out. He was commissioned temp 2/Lieut London Gazette 13th November,1914 and arrived in France 21/07/1915.He served with the 11th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, appointed Captain and was wounded on the Somme 1916.After the War he worked in The Department for Overseas Trade(1918-1940) his Medals were sent to H.M. Trade Commissioner 11, Grey St., Wellington, New Zealand. He worked in The Dominions Office 1941-1946 and was U.K. Trade Commissioner to Ireland between 1946-1954 and was awarded the O.B.E in 1950.
An interest in Lepidoptera led to the publication of a "A list of Irish Butterflies" in 1960 and "The revised Catalogue of Irish Macrolepidoptera" in 1964.He died in 1972.
