South Africa Medal (1853)
Named to: JOHN C PATTERSON ACTING MATE.
Medal about very fine, pitted and edge bruising.
Served on H.M.S Castor( Acting Mate) in the Kaffir War, and on H.M.S. Amphion (Mate) qualifying for the Baltic Medal.
On 15th June, 1858 -to 29th March 1862 he joined the "Caesar" for gunnery duties, during which time the following incident occurred:
"A short reference was made in The Times 18th July, 1859 about a disturbance that took place several days ago following the flogging of a a Seaman from the Steamship "Caesar" in Plymouth for repair. The seaman, William Stephenson, had twice made attempts to incite acts of insubordination, if not Mutiny. As the sentence was being carried out, a conflict took place on shore between Artisan workers and Officers. Captain Mason ordered Lieutenant John Reid and Third-Lieutenant John C. Patterson, with Lieutenant Dixon to go on shore and secure the ringleaders, with a party of Royal Marines" (full details with medal)
A Gunnery Officer, he was also recognised for his cool and able conduct for an attack on 26th January 1860?
13th July 1864 he was reprimanded by Court martial.
