Deck Hand Daniel Sturman, Steam Trawler William Humphries (London) Fishing fleet died on 20th November 1939 aged 44.
Son of Henry and Mary Sturman; husband of Elizabeth May Sturman, of Hemblington, Norfolk.
He is buried at Portree (Stronuirinish) Cemetery
Daniel Sturman was born at Somerleyton, Suffolk on 30th October, 1893.He enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 10th January 1913.He is variously shown as living at Belton, Suffolk, Gorleston and Freethorpe, Norfolk. He served on various armed fishing vessels before being dispersed to shore on 4th February 1919.
he was working as a deck hand with the Fishing fleet on 20th November 1939 75 miles Northwest of Rathlin on the "William Humphries"
(Skipper Charles Horace Bridge) which was fishing along with the "Sulby" when she was hit by 5 rounds from the U-33 (Hans-Wilhelm von Dresky) which also sunk the "Sulby". All crew members abandoned ship in one lifeboat as witnessed from the lifeboat of the "Sulby" However, all 13 crew member were lost, 2 bodies later being washed up on the Isle Of Skye.
