Walter Ponting was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire in 1830.He attested for the Medical Staff Corps in 1855, later being transferred to the Army Hospital Corps. His discharge papers state that he served in Malta for 2 years and 135 days and in China for 2 Years and 10 months.
He was discharged in 1878 after over 22 years service.
He is confirmed on the China and Ashantee Medal rolls, The China Medal roll states that he was on the Hospital ship in the Pei-Ho at the Taku Forts assault.
The Medal roll is annotated along with a number of other men on the roll who may have been entitled to the The Taku Forts clasp. However, the China Medal looks entirely as issued.
